Thanks for the post -- really helpful. FWIW, this setup also works with an AirPort Extreme G (one of the later UFO-style base stations) connected to the modem, and with an AirPort Express N connected to the G's LAN port.

I set everything up and it works great...but only one problem...

I want my Airport Express G to act as an access point for my DirecTV and you can't do this while setting up the Airport G Base under Bridge mode since it doesn't allow internet sharing when in this mode. Dooooooh. The express won't connect using WDS, or am I doing something wrong?

Interesting posting.

I tried to do the same..
physically isolating the devices based on connection speed: 5 Ghz (802.11 n) + 2.4 Ghz (802.11 g) + 100 mbp and gigabit. Sadly the AEBS gigabit model doesn't support jumbo packets for its gigabit switch.

Cablemodem ---->>>> Open Source router with 4 port switch (using Tomato firmware instead of DD-WRT) --> AEBS (connected into the lan port of each switch)

open source router has WAN connector to Cable modem

DHCP is running on the Tomato router ( a buffalo airstation)

address space is 192.1.1.x

tomato router is 192.168.1.1
AEBS router (working as a switch with wifi Acess Point) in bridge mode: 192.168.1.2
submask 255.255.255.0

I now have isolated browsing from my hacked iphone (802.11( 54 )g speeds), Macbook connected and running 802.11 n speeds, my DNS-323 NAS & PowerMac G5 on gigabit.

I can transfer 1.49 Gigabyte file between DNS-323 NAS and PowerMac G5 in about 5 minutes.
Pretty darn fast.

I wanted to put a gigabit switch that supports jumbo frames off of the AEBS switch ports, but couldn't.
I haven't figured out if it is the PowerMac g5 , DNS323 or switch causing me grief.

oh well.. time to test it out.

The network has two distinct wifi SSID (g and n networks)
but I use the same wpa2 key for admin ease.

Port forwarding is on, the Tomato router. Since I have ftp service on the DNS-323, and bt client.
I also have ssh ports for each client on for the tomato router, PowerMac G5, and DNS-323

I have a diagram but can't post it here.. no email to send you the file.

Excellent post. Thank you.

I've been trying to do the same thing in my house in order to separate my (n) macs from my iPhone (which was making the whole network slower). I never realized that the "bridge" is not the Airport Extreme (n network), but the last router on the chain.
Mine happens to be a Dynex (b/g) router. I went back to that router, set it to "bridge mode" and it all started working fine.

I did notice that it had the same name as my main (n) network. That did not appear to cause problems, but I changed it to something else, just to make sure.

Anyway... Thanks a lot for taking the time to share this!!!

What a great article - thanks
Minor update to the DANUAU link to apple manual has changed. It's now:

@yachts99

I'm 99% sure that you connect the Extreme-G's WAN port to one of the Extreme-N's LAN ports.

Which port do you use on the Extreme-G, WAN or LAN? As in the Extreme-N connects to which port on the Extreme-G?

It's not clear from the Apple illustration but within the same article (under "Setting up Roaming") it says to connect to the LAN port on the second and subsequent Extreme(s).

Great write up. I have a similar set up, but my 2nd router, is also an Extreme N (just not Gigabit). The main router is a Gigabit Extreme N but all the LAN Ethernet ports are full. Is there a way to set this up so that the second router (your Extreme G, my N) can connect via Wireless to the main router instead of via Ethernet? Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to create a B/G only network on the second Extreme N. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
