While the “mobile” internet was largely a failure, there are some good examples of where it succeeded.
- Quick information snippets and live game summaries.
- Major League Baseball’s mobile site.
- Mobile Yellow Pages, but also includes White Pages, Reverse Lookup for phone and addresses, Neighbor Look-up, and Maps & Driving Directions. I use this instead of wap.switchboard.com which doesn’t work on the iPhone because it redirects to the full Switchboard.com page.
- Mobile weather, includes forecast. A bit more depth than what you get via iPhone’s weather app. Bookmark the results page.
- and
- Mobile versions of GMail and Google
- This is a cool site, but it doesn’t work on the iPhone, as they automatically redirect you to the full Amazon page. Pity, as Amazon still suffers from the “Yahoo of the 90s” idea that they need to cram as much as possible into every square inch.
- and
- Mobile sites to track packages. You can also enter the tracking number for most carriers into Google and it will suggest the tracking results page.
- Technically this isn’t a mobile site, but it is a relatively clean (but getting muddier) website for getting movie listings. Apparently no one in the movie business wants to tell you when movies are playing unless you want to download 384kb worth of crap about what Paris Hilton is doing and who’s walking the red carpet and whom is sleeping with whom. And Flash ads. Don’t forget the Flash ads.
Those are some of the sites I’ve quickly added to my iPhone.
Also I will be re-working http://tntluoma.com/search/ to be more iPhone friendly very soon.
