the ring

Scale: 8/10
Should you see it? YES
How's the writing? GOOD
Any gaping holes in the plot? NO, but all answers are not given at the end
What stands out? First movie in a long time to actually freak me out a little.
See it in the theater or wait to rent? WORTH THE THEATER

That's your 20 seconds, but there's more...

The Ring does several things really well. First of all, it jumps right into the plot. Within 5 minutes of the opening credits... err, well actually there aren’t any opening credits. You only know the movie has begun by paying attention, so hopefully there aren’t any movie-whisperers behind you or you may have to shush them, which makes me feel older than God’s babysitter, but sometimes it just has to be done.

The movie moves quickly into the plot and pulls you into it. Do not expect to get a refill on that popcorn, because what you miss may very well mean that you won’t understand something later on, and whoever you went to see it with won’t want to tear their eyes away to try and describe it to you.

Most scary movies aren’t really all that scary. They may surprise you, they may gross you out, they may make you say “That’s just not right” but there are very few truly scary movies. The old Friday the 13th movies are more embarassing than anything. Carnage does not equal a good scare.

That’s why The Ring is scary. There is very little to scare you on screen. The few scenes that they do show that are truly scary are shown only for a moment. It’s up to your brain to fill in the rest... and your brain can probably scare you much more than anything a Hollywood crew can come up with.

Comments

Although there is not much gore, bad language, or sexual inuendos. The sheer fright facter should have been enough to grant this flick an R rating.
great movie if you like to be scared.
ranks right up there with the excorsist, if not above.

This Movie was Awesome. It has been a really long time since i have seen a movie as scary as this one. Actually there is no movie scarier than this one. What am i talkin about.? This movie will capture you from beginning to end. and will scare the crap out of you and thats a promise.. This movie does for Tv What the Shower scene in Psycho does for showers, But ten times better. This girl is unexplainably scary. It will stick with you after u watched it. This Movie Is a 10 and i suggest everyone buy it when it comes out. Just save me a copy.
Berny Meany "GO CATS"

One of the best of the century,
I would rank like this:
1)Exorcist
2)The Ring
3)Silence of the Lambs
4)The Psycho
5)The Entity
6)Scream

I think that "The Ring" was one of the scariest movies ever made! To have "Scream" on the same list is an outrage to scary movie watchers. I couldn't sleep for about 2 months afterward, it really stuck with me. All the flashing pictures, and all the rotten faces. It scared the crap out of me and my friends. It was really well done.

7 days . . . . . .

I watch very few movies....and when it comes to the scary ones its even rare.
One thing is for sure "The Ring" is on the most horror filled movies i have ever watched...
The only complaint is about few questions like 'how samara gets to know who has watched the movie' ...remaining unanswered.
I hope i can get on with my projects submissions for the week ahead.

Rating: 10/10. Definitely a great movie...throughout the whole thing, you just feel shivers down your spine. Everything just pieces together so perfectly. The beginning if filled with parts that WILL make you jump from your chair. I rented it, was just as good as it might have been in the movies. I didn't sleep after I watched it. The girl, Samara, ust gives off this sense of creepiness that follows the rest of the movie. The end is very surprising...just close your eyes when they show the people dead...it's not a pretty sight. Highly recommend this movie for people into this genre.

I just finished watching the movie and it was great. My wife scared the crap out of me afterwards by brushing her hair forward and sneaking up on me. She will pay.

Heres my question. Why does making a copy of the video save the primary female character and her son at the end?

the exorcist isn't scary. it's just corny. the ring- once you get past that the whole plot is "watch and die" is scary!

I got a late start on this film and wanted to see it in the theatres but of course college was getting in the way. I heard before I rented it on DVD that it was much scarier in the theatre, and after watching it at home with my family I must say this: I wouldn't of been able to move from my seat in the theatre, because I would of been too paralyzed with fear. A good thrill ride.

Being a total horror junkie i was at first unsure what to think when i heard about 'The Ring'-was it possible to remake a classic Japanese horror movie, that when originally released scared the pants of viewers, and do it justice? The answer to this is yes! Gore Verbinski has managed to capture the sheer terror and nail biting tension of the original and recreate it 10 times better in 'The Ring'. Immediately you are sucked in and not released until the final credits, and even then you find yourself unable to move from the sheer punch this movie packs.

Doesn't copying the movie save the woman and her kid because "what (Samara) wants it to be heard"? People need to copy it so many people can view it and be hurt. That's what I thought.

This movie scared me so much. Do not be like me and watch it alone in the dark at midnight.
I couldn't sleep for a week, lol. I wonder why..
I don't really get the ending though

After watching this movie, I did not get to sleep until 3am because I was afraid that Samara would come out of my TV. Honestly...this movie scared me to death! Normally, horror movies don't bother me but I found this one just so disturbing. I was perfectly fine until she came out of the TV...I will never sleep again. Great movie...a must see if you hate sleeping....lol

I heard some good comments from friends on this movie, but when I finally got to watch it, I was pretty freaked out by the time the movie ended, although I got one good laugh when the horse tripped off the farry and fell into the water. It was a good movie and I give it a 10/10.

tHIS WAS THE FUNNIEST MOVIE EVER CREATED BY MAN. FISRT OF ALL THAT HORSE QUITE DIDNT MAKE THE JUMP WHEN JUMPING OFF THE BARGE.AND WHEN THE LADY WAS LIEK "ANEE, I SAW HER FACE" AND THEN SHOWED THE FASCE OF THE GIRL I ALMOST SH*T MY PANTS I WAS LAUGHING SO HARD. ON THE WHOLE, THE MOVIE BLEW! HOW COULD YOU LIKE A MOVIE THATS SUPPOSED TO BE SCARY BUT IS FUNY. I MEAN COME ON, GO BACK AND WATCH IT IT'S RETARTED.

This were a great film .. the horse did let it down and i would like a sequel :) maybe then it can be improved ? it would be good to see another good film :)

I really thought this movie was frightening. Some of the imagery was the best I have seen in a long time.

I did however feel that the ending left too much open to the imagination, but that was the intention. Now, about 3 days later, I have started to understand the whole meaning of it.

So... was "The Ring" the circle of light Sumara saw when the well was closed, or does it have a dual meaning in the never ending need to show someone else the video tape in order to save yourself?

omg i loved this movie, k, i watched it in march brake and now its like april 17 and im still scared holy shit i always look at the tv or behide me sumtimes eekk if u want another dose of the ring go to yahoo.com, rite in the ring, scroll down untill u see ring, the, then click on it, once yer in the site click enter.....hope u havea good scare.....

OMG THE RING WAS FUKKING SCARY YO MAN U NOE WHAT I AM SAYING DAWG!......IT WAS SOOOOO WACKED IT WAS SICK YO.......WELL MAYBE U PPL WHO R IN DA "GHETTO" CAN COME AND CHILL WITH MEH AND MAH HOMIES....WELL HOLLA @ MEH IN THE T-DOT...I GOSTA BOUNCE....AIIGHT HOLLA BAKK BROOKLYN! (*PAKI VOICE*)

... i just watched this with my girlfriend... Jesus, that was the scariest thing i have ever seen on screen. My girlfriend was seriously screeming when Samara came out of the TV, and nothing ever even scares her. She was so scared she said "I wished i had never seen that movie"... (she loved it, i know she did).

Anyway, that takes the cake for scary movies, i have never been scared by a movie before with the exception of the remake of the Shining directed by King himself. nothing touches this movie.

reading these reviews helped me understand it.

God, This was such an awesome movie. It scared me shitless. I am a total horror-flick-junkie. This is by far one of the best thrillers I've seen. Its rediculously frightening without being horribly gory.

that was a good movie

heres my top 5
1. the ring
2. bringing down the house
3. darkness falls
4. final destination 2
5. saved

does anyone agree or disagree with my top 5?

I'm in the minority here so all you who havn't seen it don't base your decision on whether or not to check it out on me. But I didn't like The Ring. For the most part I thought the flick was very suspensful and definitely held my attention, but didn't even scare me a little bit, which disappointed me.

To all who have seen it (i wont give anything away) When the kid had a N*** ****D at the end i thought something really exciting was going to happen and create a dramatic ending but it just never came, which i also was not enamored with.

This may sound odd, but the scariest movie I ever saw was Jaws. Those are the types of movies that freak me out. The movies that I believe can happen to me and adversly change my life forever. This movie didn't have that effect, and inturn didn't leave an impression on me.

I will say this though, It definitely kept my eye the whole time...trying to figure out "what is up with this tape?" But in the end that wasn't enough for me to fall in love with it. i recommend checking it out, and you should base your opinions on it yourself. I don't know maybe I just have thick skin:)

Mike - you and me both. So much more could have been done with the plot.... it just seems to lead off on so many anticlimactic distractions. It did hold my attention, but I was disappointed in the 'answers' that are given to our questions. Could've been scarier.

my new top 5

1. bringinging down the house
2. the ring
3. darkness falls
4. the hot chick'
5. saved

someone put there top 5
does anyone have the same as me

First off, this movie is very inconclusive. The movie pulls you in, and is definately scary. Lots of imagery, and scares you alot, but it has a good plot that just doesn't make sense. Overall, I disliked the movie because there is so much that happens that is ot explained and has no meaning. If you watch it, you will know what I mean. Too much of the time you are left thinking, WHY??? And, much doesn't make sense at all. WAY too much is left unanswered. I, and everyone I know, simply don't get it. The ending just doesn't "wrap it all up." Your still wondering why and how most of the plot happend.

Did anyone like the camera work??

No one talked about it, but I thought it was excellent! The plot wouldn't be the plot it is without some of the scenes, flashes, colors, ect.

Why do I do this to myself?? I have too much of an imagination for my own good! Keep thinking that grown up little girl is going to crawl out of the tv after me!!!!!! Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh. Wish I had never seen it. Was going to rent drum line- I think I could have slept tonight if I had.

this movie is scary u have seven days katie ur patateic who the heck writes about 7 days moron get a life

i agree with freakcheska sehz right ur r a total idot why the heck do u even come on these sites ge a life u should at leats be married good where have u been it isnt the 18 century anymore

The Ring was "ok", that is it. I have seen MUCH scarier movies than this joke. I put the first 20 minutes of "when a stranger calls" against most horror films. If you have not seen it, put it on your list. I will warn you, the first and last 20 minutes are the must see part, the middle is awful. Trust me though....the opening is worth viewing.

I thought The Ring was a great movie, scarier than any other horror movie I've seen, including The Exorcist. It works on your mind if you know what I mean, and it leaves you thinking about it afterwards unlike most horror movies which just make you jump a little while you're watching.

whut tha hell wuz with tha green light every time i saw it i wuz lyke omg sumthing bad is going to happen...mai advise if yew are watching it at midnight n yr scared shitless watch a nice calming movie after it cuz it helps yew go to sleep..relle

OMG that movie scared the fuck out of me! that little girl, samara was it, total FREAKSHOW. annoying teeth on that lil dude tho... jeez i couldnt sleep! and with video tapes crossed off for the evening...yikes!

yo, dat movie was off da chains. It was madd good. But the first three times I watched it were the scariest. I've seen it like 10 times and it don't scare me any more. But I still love it. and I think there should be another one like Ring 2 but in the American Version. I'm watchin it rite now ( I know sounds kinda dumb) any way don't u think it's real weird looking at how samara looks in real life? She looks all, innocent, but in the movie she look all weird. But it's all good she did a good job and that's my most favorite movie in da world.
Holla bac -1-

okay, you HAVE to see the Ring. It's SOOOOO cool. I've seen it twice, and it's REALLY scary. So, if you're really young then don't watch it, because i had nightmares for a while. but, yeah, you should see it if you're older.

LIKE OMG!!! THIS WAS THE PSYCHO-CRAZIEST MOVIE WE'VE EVER WATCHED!! EVERTHING ABOUT IT WAS LIKE WHOA! I MEAN SAMARA WAS SO SCARY! WE DIDN'T SLEEP FOR 3/4 OF A YEAR!! WE'RE STILL NOT SLEEPING!!! WE HAVE THE BIGGESTS BAGS UNDER OUR EYES!! HOLY SHIT!! IS THAT THE TV?!! CRAP, I HAVE A BLOODY NOSE!! SHIT, MY PHONES RINGING!! WHAT?! DID I HEAR A "YOU WILL SUFFER"? HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SH-...

Franceska is a stupid scum fuck and this movie sucked cause none of the plot made any fucking sense. I like vagina, but besides that how could a stupid bitch girl make a video and kill people but not get herself out of a stupid well. retarted...

I saw you jerk

This is one of the most scariest movies I've ever seen. I couldn't sleep for a few days afterwards. Im only 12 and I think that the movie deserved an R sticker. I get scared whenever the phone rings and im worried that Samara will come out of my tv!

This movie was so friken scary! i ahd nightmares for so0o long, and it wasn't THAT bloody, only frighteningly scary! 7 days....

I thought this movie was the scariest movie I've ever seen. It's been a couple of months since I saw it (only once) and that last death scene is still stuck in my head! It really affects you without even showing gory, blood-drenched deaths and not even as much as a pocketknife is used to kill these people. The story really intruiged me and after surfing the web for a while I found this site http://ringworld.somrux.com/index.htm which really goes deep into the story and will explain a lot of the more confusing stuff in the movie. As for the "open" ending, I hear that a sequel is in production and will explain a lot more! She never sleeps...

omg...the movie was reallllyyy good man the lil gurl samara WOW she did great it was a freaky movie the first movie that finally freaked the hell outta me!! it was wicked

I feel this was a very good movie. Not much to be confused about. If you make a copy, you live. This movie is similar to The Changling (also a good movie)in many ways. I am impossible to freak out or scare. This movie got to me just a bit. Thats saying a lot. Its a must see.

It's an ok movie,
I was never freaked out though.
Many questions are left unanswered.
The ending was strang, well I thought so anywaz.
If you like these types of movies rent it, but I tell ya it is strang not scary.

AHHH!!! I loved this movie. IT SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME!!! I couldn't sleep without my lights fully on because I was afriad I would be attacked by Samara Morgan. I think it should've been Rated R. If you haven't seen this movie, you should!!! I recommend it. I do advise you...don't watch it...alone...or else...

hey,
this movie was cool and scary. Some things I didnt understand but I figured most of them out. I practically fell out of my seat when I saw Katie in the closet scene. Now when I watch that part though, I start laughing because usually I am with my friends and they start making jokes about it like when my we saw that part my friend was like, "whoa!! shes hot!!" haha. But yeah, its scary. I really wasnt that freaked out by some parts but the beginning and the end were REALLY scary. It was kind of sad when the horse fell into the ocean, some of you sick freaks thought that it was funny. It was also freaky when Samara grabbed Rachels arm. But you should see this movie with some friends who will make you laugh because this movie has alot of things that you can make fun of. When you make fun of it, its not scary. But if you wanna be freaked out then watch it by yourself in the dark at night. WHOA! I could never do that. Samara was so cute, until they showed her rotted face, that was akward.Anyways I reccomend this movie!! 10/10

Can anyone tell me if the girl was evil or did the dad want the mother to quit paying so much attention to her that she had to kill her?

Actually, a movie is only scary if you let it scare you, or if you want it to scare. To go into a movie with expectations is an invetation to dissappointment. To all of you who say "I'm not scared to easily" You need to relize that it's okay to get scared in movies. We're not 8 anymore people. The guy who said he laughed in it obviously got scared, cuz he picked a certain scene that most people feel is the scariest in the movie to pick on. Just cuz a movie is popular doesn't mean you have to make fun of it and laugh at it. And just cuz there old doesn't mean they suck. The Exorcist is FAR SCARIER than The Ring, because The Exorcist is based on a true story. In order to get scared in any movie, you have to watch it all alone in the dark, in the right frame of mind, and as you would reading a book or playing a video game, use your imagination and put yourself in the movie, and trust me it makes movies, not just horror, incredible and will impact you. I mean what's the point of sitting down for 2 hours and watching a little box with pictures. If I'm gonna waste a good 2 hours of my life on something, I want to enjoy it, and this technique has worked. But if you view movies like The Exorcist and THe Ring with the mindset of "oh it's not real, it's just a movie", then let me reverse that on you, "oh Young Frankenstein (example) wasn't funny cuz it's all fake and they just use a bunch of jokes and stuff, but it's not real" or "saving private ryan wasn't touching because all that was fake makeup and acting, and it wasn't real." You see how stupid that sounds. Let's all be mature and allow ourselves to get scared in a movie. I mean scares aren't stupid visuals, buckets of gore, and little jump scenes. A scare stays with you, but I never had a movie give me nightmares. My scariest flicks are:
1.Exorcist
2.The Shining
3.Halloween
4.Alien
5.The Evil Dead
6.Texas Chainsaw Massacre
7. A Nightmare on Elm Street
8.Night of the Living Dead
9.Psycho
10.The Ring
11.Jaws
12.The Thing
13. The Omen
14. The Blair Witch Project
15.Rosemary's Baby

I think what you are missing is that people respond to things in different ways. For a movie to make me laugh it has to pull me in and let me (or even force me) to forget that it is only make-believe. For a movie to scare me it has to get me to believe it. When I saw "Darkness Falls" it was dark and rainy and the electricity kept threatening to go out. Perfect scenario for a scary movie to have an effect, right? Well it did... until they showed the "monster" and it looked dumb, and suddenly I was pulled out of the moment.

There's nothing wrong with being scared of scary stuff in movies, but not everything that is intended to be scary will be... just like not every joke will seem funny in every comedy and not every dramatic scene will be impressive. That's why some movies are better than others.
