Beyond 30 Reloaded... or Reborn.... or... something like that

TnTLuoma.com is undergoing a redesign.

This came about for a few reasons, including:

  1. I was switching webhosts, so it made sense to do it now
  2. I have wanted to combine my various weblogs into one
  3. The old design was such a mis-mash that it had numerous flaws

What this means to you is that if you used to just read one weblog, now that they are combined, you are pretty much stuck reading all of the posts. Sorry. Maintaining several different weblogs was just a royal pain. It probably would not have been so bad if I knew more about Movabletype (which seems infinitely powerful).

Also, the name will no doubt cause some confusion. Originally I had a weblog named Beyond30 which was supposed to look at Opera tips and tricks after the completion of my series 30 Days to Becoming an Opera Lover.

However, I found that I was writing about a whole bunch of different things, some personal, some technological, some about the web, some about other browsers, and so on. The name never really meant what it was supposed to mean.

When I decided to combine all my various weblogs into one, I tried to think of a name for them, something catchy and unique. While I liked my initial choice a lot, for various reasons I decided not to use it, nor even reveal it. Someday someone else will use it and I will have to say, “Well that was my idea first, but they actually did something with it.”

After that I thought about using “Beyond 30” not as it was originally intended, but as an indicator of this time in my life when I am now “Beyond 30” myself. Of course if this were to continue for another 10 years it would be more aptly named “Beyond 40” but since 40 is still “beyond 30” it will still be applicable. Perhaps I will rename it “Further Beyond 30” for my 40s and “Even Further Beyond 30” for my 50s...

Anyway, if you find something missing, please let me know right away.

Do you have an intent of fixing the images that broke in the course of design change? I'm particularly interested in the Opera vs Mozilla page, because I have a link to it from my website.

YES! It is my intention to fix everything that was broken by the changeover. However, since I am only one person and the old site had grown unwieldy, I have missed some things. A lot of links are broken, I know, and a lot of images are probably no longer working.

Please let me know if you find something missing or broken, and I will endeavor to fix it asap.

The Opera vs Mozilla page is now fixed.

Thanks for redirecting

Been a cheerleader for Opera from the beginning and now I gave something back. OperaAdFilter. Block those nasty ads quickly, easily. Free program (not even ad sponsored :) ) ... check it out ... Big fan of your 30 Day Opera Lover segment too; would love your opinion on OperaAdFilter. Thanks!

I don't know how to go back to previous DDOEs. What is different now?

Love you.

The factoid stating that "a ducks quack does not echo" is not actually true. It's echo is there, but it matches the ducks quacking sound so well and so faintly that it just sounds like part of the original quack. It was tested on the show Mythbusters and proved a myth.

Hey Tim,

Did you dump your search page? I can't find it!

Mike

http://tntluoma.com/search/ is now back online.

If you try to view any archive older than April of this year, you are hit with the following PHP errors:

Warning: main(/global/php/together.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/.jailbait/luomat/tntluoma.com/ethan/archive/200403/index.php on line 13

Warning: main(): Failed opening '/global/php/together.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/.jailbait/luomat/tntluoma.com/ethan/archive/200403/index.php on line 13

Also, the link on the main page for a gallery of Ethan pictures is broken.

cannot view picture in explorer

Hi, Tim. Every time I use the link for "Previous Entry" or click on the prior day's picture, I get the "Oops!" page with a very cute back shot of your nearly naked tyke. Just thought you'd like to know as it's happened more than once. I CAN get to the picture using the DDOE link on the side of the page and working backwards, but not right from the page that is called up when I use this link www.tntluoma.com/ethan/daily

You need to update your link to the DDOE from http://www.tntluoma.com/ethan/daily to http://www.tntluoma.com/ethan/daily/

Yes, one lousy / will screw up the whole thing.

Yes, if I were a better web designer, I could fix this problem.

No, I probably won't, because the code that controls the DDOE is such intricate spaghetti logic that I don't really remember how it all works anymore. It was one of my first attempts at writing PHP, and you know what they say about PHP: the good news is that it's so easy, anyone can use it. The bad news is that it's so easy, anyone can use it.

On your front page, all article links have the current date to the right of them instead of what I assume is supposed to be the date you wrote the article.

> There is something in Firebird I definetely regret that is not present in Opera: The menu

Yes, it would be great to stuff statusbar in there, but I personally am now willing to exchange classic menu for a toolbar with menu. It's significantly slower (machines I'm working on are all Opera seems to miss a feature Firebird has: Load images from the originated server only.
> Though I cannot estiomate if this feature is of good worth.
I think there would be a good use of it: not displaying ads. For this purpose to be efficient, it could be done in a way of allow/deny list. But then, this is again rather a proxy / hosts file question ;)

I gave Opera a try a year ago and now I can't live without it. I won't use neither Mozilla nor Firebird because I've seen 'em only after Opera (sorry guys, I know you try, try harder, I keep my finger crossed for you - my suggestion: make it small&fast). It's well worth your money.

Hey guys,
how is everyone. Ethan has gotten so big. Well everyone at my house is doing great. I just graduated high school and Freddy and Willie are going to be seniors in August. They are very excited. I just got a job at North Florida hospital and I am loving it. My parents are doing great as well. we all miss you very very much. We hope to talk to you all soon. hugs and kisses. xoxo Rachael Lewis

Hi
Thanks for the Hotmail Login Panel.

However, I did remove the "will stop working" and "Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional" text and changed background color (to #006699) and text color to white. and added a link to a MSN picture (http://64.4.55.109/DA_DK_118x35.gif - I'm danish)

Looks more "real" and stylish now... but thanks

IMHO it«s definetily not true to say that Opera has tabbrowsing earlier than other browsers. AFAIK Netcaptor was the first one, so do I remember.

Correct me if I«m wrong

Hmmm...
I was directed here by jessett.com.
They used your site as a reference for using their dhtml menu. I don't seem to see it. Perhaps you should let them know.
Anyway, the reason for this comment is to let you know that page beyond30 displays the current date beside each blog entry link. (Within each blog, the date is correct.) I only noticed this because I thought it peculiar that an individual could have 346 blog entries in one day. I suppose it's possible but you would have to type considerably faster than I can :)

I am looking for any help on customizing the opera browser for the mac. i am using version 7.54 on os x 10.3. if you arnt using the mac... then you can stop reading here if you want to not waste your time ( i know some ppl hate mac).

any ways, if you are reading on, i have customized the right click menu on the pc version of opera to post a url to my delicious account. but trying the same trick on the mac doesnt fly. i have no idea where to start (logs, error messages, ...) to trace where the probelm exists.

any ideas, thoughts, comments ?

as I said, great '404' page.... :D:D

Dear Timothy J. Luoma,

(At first: I hope that I can meet Your 'little bit' strict requirements written under and above this comment field, because english is not my maternal language. :)
Second: it will be a little bit long to read this comment, but I hope You will be so kind to read it.)
I am beginner in website making and so I was searching for informations on the internet. I found two interesting (in fact more than two) pages on Your site.

http://www.tntluoma.com/sidebars/codes/
http://www.tntluoma.com/sidebars/triplecolors/#contact

I always wanted to make such webpages with character- and color codes. As I am a lazy guy, now I would like to ask Your permission to download and to translate to Hungarian (there is not so many thing to translate) and after to put it on my website with Your name indicated on, naturally.
That site is mostly just for my own usage (contains my photos).
I found these pages interesting because I can test monitors and webbrowsers with.

I have a remark about the page:
http://www.tntluoma.com/sidebars/codes/
in the heading it contains a line:

I am not sure but I think that with this character set some of the the last codes can not be visualised.
For example: "〈 or ⟨
left-pointing angle bracket = bra" they will be like this: 〈 or 〈.
I do not know what is the best character set for this but it is not iso-8859-1 nor iso-8859-2 nor their 'windows-xx' equivalents, I am sure!
I hope You will find the best!

Thank You for Your reply and best wishes for You and Your family and Your website! :)

RE: your link for Sam Spade.

Clicking on your link to add Sam Spade as an Opera panel points to http://www.tntluoma.com/samspade.

I believe it should be http://www.tntluoma.com//sidebars/samspade (As listed on the Opera "panels" page, http://my.opera.com/community/customize/panel/index.pl?parent=1&cat=&skip=0).

Followup on Sam Spade link:

The link on the Opera Panels site (let's call it link "O")has the ADDRESS in the NAME field, where the one on your site (call it link "T") has "Sam Spade" in the NAME field. Which means that clicking on "O" puts the full address as the title of the button, and "T" does it correctly (once you fix the address).

THX!!!
