I am wondering if this would work for installing OS X on an Eee PC. An OS X laptop that I could run for ~7 hours on battery would be lovely.

UPDATE: I was able to install OS X on an 1000HA and it works really well. Battery life is 4 hours of constant use with Wifi enabled.

The keyboard, while small, isn’t really all that much smaller than my MacBook’s. The biggest challenge is the touchpad, which is quite touchy. I’ve adjusted, my wife has not.

Opera defines a “preview” as:

Yesterday was a banner day… not only did we pick up Tracey from the airport (thus ending an 8-day Mommy draught that Ethan had endured), but we also stopped by Toys-R-Us and Ethan picked out a new bed.

Yes he picked one out for himself. “Yay yay yay! This is so exciting” he kept saying. I told Tracey, “Yeah, he’s excited, but he has no idea what we expect him to do with it [i.e. sleep by himself through the night]”

We called our local Wal-Mart and they did not have the bed, so we’d have to take it home with us from Huntington. Only problem? Dad had come with me to pick Tracey up from the airport, and the bed took up most of the space in the back, so Tracey ended up wedged between the door and the box.

We disassembled the crib and pulled out the 4 pieces to the Race Car Bed: front, back, left, right.

How hard could this be?

Well, there was a peg on the back designed to fit into a hole on the side. Problem? Yup. The hole was flush left and the peg was centered.

“Bring me my Exacto Knife!” I called to Tracey, who did so. She also picked up the phone and dialed 9-1- and waited for me to start bleeding all over the floor. To the surprise of just about everyone, I managed to increase the size of the hole without bodily injury to anyone. Tracey hung up the phone.

As soon as the bed was together Ethan immediately commenced jumping up and down on it “Wheee wheee wheee!”

However, about an hour later (approaching bedtime), he started “I don’t wanna sleep in my bed.”

He did, however, sleep there for most of the night, looking most-cute.

Our camera is being sent off for repairs - the shutter-release button is stuck in the “Down” position…. anyone else think it might just be exhausted? Fortunately we purchased the extended warranty when we bought the camera last March (you do remember the story of what happened to our old camera right?)

Camera or no, I promise you that you haven’t seen anything cuter than Ethan sound asleep on a Race Car Bed under his Baby Snoopy comforter.

Firefox continues to do a great PR job, but does it really have that much over Opera? Let’s have a look (again) at their dubious claims of greatness.

Popup Blocking - Stop annoying popup ads in their tracks with Firefox’s built in popup blocker.

Yup, Opera does that.

Tabbed Browsing - View more than one web page in a single window with this time saving feature. Open links in the background so that they’re ready for viewing when you’re ready to read them. Find out more…

*yawn* Yeah, Opera does that too. Opera actually has a Multi Document Interface which is a lot more powerful than just tabs.

Privacy and Security - Built with your security in mind, Firefox keeps your computer safe from malicious spyware by not loading harmful ActiveX controls. A comprehensive set of privacy tools keep your online activity your business.

Huh, just like Opera. Opera lets you easily select information you want to keep or delete.

Smarter Search - Google Search is built right into the toolbar, and there are a plethora of other search tools including Keywords (type “dict <word>” in the Location Bar), and the new find toolbar (which finds as you type and eliminates the annoying window that always seems to be in your way).

Opera has several search engines built-in (without needing extensions). You can add your own if you want. (Opera has had this for years, despite Firefox making it seem like a unique invention of theirs.

Live Bookmarks - RSS integration lets you read the latest news headlines and read updates to your favorite sites that are syndicated. Find out more…

Opera has an integrated RSS reader.

Hassle-Free Downloading - Files you download are automatically saved to your Desktop so they’re easy to find. Fewer prompts mean files download quicker.

Opera starts downloading as soon as you click the link. Take as much time as you want to decide where to save the file (or define where certain file types will be saved). There’s also the Quick Download option which lets you download without any prompts.

Fits Like a Glove - Simple and intuitive, yet fully featured, Firefox has all the functions you’re used to - Bookmarks, History, Full Screen, Text Zooming to make pages with small text easier to read, etc.

Of course Opera has had these for years, and also gives you the ability to edit your menus and keyboard commands right in the app without needing to get into editing XUL files or downloading extensions. Opera also gives you access to many settings via the <kbd>F12</kbd> menu, and lets you turn image loading on/off with a single button.

S, M, L or XL—You Choose - Firefox is the most customizable browser on the planet. Customize your toolbars to add additional buttons, install new Extensions that add new features, add new Themes to browse with style, and use the adaptive search system to allow you to search an infinite number of engines. Firefox is as big or small as you want.

“Most customizable”? Hrm… I’m not sure about that. Why should I have to download extensions to get things to work like I want? Will they conflict with one another? Will they work in future releases? Opera is a smaller package than Firefox with a lot more features, without having to search around for a tool to make it work better. Opera builds better in from the beginning. And we’ve got customizable toolbars and buttons too. Plenty of themes at http://my.opera.com too.

Setup’s a Snap - At only 4.5MB (Windows), Firefox takes just a few minutes to download over a slow connection and seconds over a fast connection. The installer gets you set up quickly, and the new Easy Transition system imports all of your settings - Favorites, passwords and other data from Internet Explorer and other browsers - so you can start surfing right away.

Wow, they’ve done well to get the download to only about 1MB larger than Opera… of course Opera has mouse gestures, RSS, and a mail client built in, not to mention IRC. Oh, and if you don’t use Windows, the download is over 8MB.

A Developer’s Best Friend - Firefox comes with a standard set of developer tools including a powerful JavaScript and CSS error/warning console, and an optional Document Inspector that gives detailed insight about your pages.

Optional, as in “separately downloadable” so they could get that download size down to 4.5MB. Opera has a Java and JavaScript console built in, and also has a built-in feature to submit pages to the W3C validator (even local pages or pages inaccessible via the Internet).

Read Mail—Not Spam - Thunderbird is the perfect complement to Firefox.

Yeah that’s not really a feature of Firefox so much as a completely different program. Thunderbird is a 5.8MB download for Windows or 11MB for Mac OS X. Opera’s Mail client has an advanced searching system that takes seconds to search through thousands of messages (like GMail, except you get to control your own mailbox). That’s built-in too.

Well, we congratulate Firefox on their professional public relations campaign to draw attention to their browser. I’m not sure that’s where I’d spend $100k, but hey, it’s not my money…

If you like Sandler and Barrymore, go see this movie. It’s a lot of fun. If you don’t, then don’t. There’s some bathroom humor, but overall it’s just a good, fun time.

They have wonderful on-screen chemistry, and they make it work. The only people who won’t like this movie are people who don’t like either of them, and, quite frankly, why would anyone who don’t like either of them go to see the movie?

This is not Punch Drunk Love (which I really enjoyed, but which was a very different Sandler movie).

Scale: 4/10
Should you see it? Not unless you are feeling too happy
How’s the writing? Mediocre
Any gaping holes in the plot? No
What stands out? It’s slow, depressing, and predictable
See it in the theater or wait to rent? Neither

I said recently that I don’t like to know much about a movie before I see it. Perhaps this was another good example of why. I knew that this was supposed to be an excellent movie, and maybe my expectations were too high.

Here is an outline of the movie (don’t keep reading if you don’t want to know some of what happens at the end).

1) Girl meets boy. She’s high class, he’s a working man. They have stilted conversation.

2) Civil War breaks out (announced by North Carolina boys celebrating “We got our war” and firing guns into the sky.

3) Stereotypical Bad Guy (who has been clearly identified since the beginning) steps forward. He and his sons won’t be fighting in the war, they’ll stay at home (cue omnious music here).

4) Men go off to war. Boy kisses Girl just as they are leaving for war.

5) War turns out to be bloody and violent. (Subtle message: War is bad, and not fun like the foolish mountain men of North Caroline were expecting it would be.) Back home, things are bad. Stereotypical Bad Guy and his sons are taking advantage of the women. Crops are not growing. Girl’s father who has a “weak chest” dies. She lets their negros free, and can’t tend to the farm herself, but is too prideful to accept help from others.

6) Boy is shot. Unlike minor characters who are shot/injured, he lives. He recovers and decides to desert and head back home. Cut away to “back home” and Stereotypical Bad Guy and his sons announce that anyone who deserts the army or anyone who harbors a deserter will be guilty of treason. Cue omninous/foreshadowing music.

7) Girl meets tough-as-nails girl who helps her get the farm back together. Says she expects to eat for payment and we are expected to ignore that girl didn’t have enough food for herself, nevermind someone else. Girl sells piano for food, becomes more like tough-as-nails girl.

8) Boy tries to get home, gets caught, gets free, tries to find shelter, runs into lonely widow (with freakishly strange looking baby), runs into evil Yankee soldiers, keeps heading home.

9) Back home, Other Family has their sons come back, they get caught and father and sons are killed by Stereotypical Bad Guy (who also wants to get Girl into bed.) Tough-As-Nails Girl has father issues. Father returns. (Cue foreshadowing “I bet everything will be OK between them in the end” music.)

10) Stereotypical Bad Guy finds Tough-As-Nails Girl’s Father (who got caught because he didn’t listen to Tough-As-Nails Girl). He and his companion get shot (reminder: Tough-As-Nails Girl’s Father is not minor character, therefore he will live).

11) Girl and Tough-As-Nails Girl find her Father (shot but not dead) and help him recover.

12) Girl goes out and finds Boy. Girl and Boy are reunited. Girl and Boy decide that a wedding is useless, all they need to do is make a promise to each other and that will be good enough. Girl and Boy do what comes next. Girl tells Tough-As-Nails Girl that she had seen Boy in a vision but it looked like he was falling, like she was losing him. Cue dramatic foreshadowing can-you-guess-how-this-will-end music.

13) Next day Stereotypical Bad Guy and his sons find them. Tough-As-Nails Girl is shot (she looks dead, but will later appear just fine.) Boy is hero, and so he shoots them all, but just when you think everything is OK you realize he is shot, and since it is now the end of the movie and — after all, we warned you — Boy staggers just like Girl saw before in her vision and yes, he is dead (about the only good part of the movie).

14) Girl and Tough-As-Nails Girl go on to live happily ever after. Girl has Boy’s baby from that one night of passion and teaches her in the ways of the farming world. Tough-As-Nails Girl and her father have reunited. Tough-As-Nails Girl now wears sundress and has a child of her own (moral of the story: she just needed a man to bring out her feminine side).

I’m sure this was a much better book than the movie, which was little more than many things we’ve seen before. It reminded me of Titanic, which was nothing more than a B-class “love story” that happened to be on the Titanic. Hrm… the only good part of that movie was that the male love interest dies at the end too.

I will not be surprised if this movie wins a lot of awards. Hollywood likes a movie where: war is shown to be bad, lots of men are shown to be evil, men who take advantage of women are shot and killed, and at the end the woman beds her man so she gets a child (a girl) before he is killed by another evil man while defending her.

Should you see it? Yes
How’s the writing? Good
Any gaping holes in the plot? None I could see
What stands out? We haven’t seen this before
See it in the theater or wait to rent? Either

I like to not know much about a movie before I see it. Most times it pays off. I had seen a preview of this movie and the title stuck in my head (hey movie execs, a good title is very important!) so we decided to go see it.

I thought it was amazing. Sure the writing was a little weak in places, but not unlike any other movie if you examine it closely (every movie has a few bad lines in it).

What surprised me was when I later learned that this movie was getting trashed in reviews. I even heard that Ashton Kutcher was refusing to promote it. If true, that’s too bad, because people are going to miss out on a very interesting movie.
