Oatmeal Chocolate Chip
3 January 2002
Tonight I made these cookies, and Tracey reported that Ethan really seemed to like them. (Ethan was born on May 28, 2002)
There is a rumor (hoax, really) that someone paid $250 (USD) for a secret Neiman Marcus cookie recipe. The story is bogus (Neiman Marcus has even published a web page giving away a free recipe.) I received an email a few years ago with the story and and a different recipe which is very good. (If anyone knows the real origin of this recipe, please let me know!)
The cookies come out very dense, and usually rather large (to keep them together before cooking) and are very good for bringing to parties, etc.
And now they have the - - ELSA - - “Ethan Luoma Seal of Approval”
- Preheat oven to 350° F
- Combine and set aside
- 2 cups (4 sticks) butter (or 2 butter flavored Crisco Sticks)
- 2 cups of brown sugar
- 2 cups of white sugar
- 4 extra-large eggs (or 5 large)
- 2 TEAspoons vanilla [an earlier version of this recipe inadvertantly omitted this ingredient!]
- Combine
- 4 cups flour (sifted)
- 5 cups powdered oatmeal (take old fashioned Quaker Oats and put them through the blender until you get a fine powder.)
- 1 TEAspoon salt
- 2 TEAspoons baking POWDER
- 2 TEAspoons baking SODA
- Combine both of the above (you’ll need a really big bowl!)
- Add 3 cups / 24 ounces of chocolate chips (Optional: Add 8-10oz raisans, nuts, or peanut butter chips). I usually use 1 bag of chocolate chips and 1 bag of peanut butter chips
- Form into little hockey puck shapes and place on greased cookie sheet.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes (less is more when cooking cookies! Soft is better!)
- Consume with mass quantities of milk
