Got Questions? Ask Jon

December 30, 2005

Slashdot says:

Opera Software has gotten all kinds of media play lately, including rumors that both Google and Microsoft were buying the company. Whether you love or hate Opera, you’ve got to give them credit for building a decent browser and grabbing a small but noticeable market share in the face of competition from both MSIE and Firefox. Co-founder/CEO Jon von Tetzchner is obviously reponsible for at least some of this success — and for much of the company’s high press profile, due not only to the Opera Browser itself but to at least one whacky PR stunt and at least one high-profile beef with Microsoft. So who is this guy? Ask and find out. He’s obviously not your typical software company CEO, so we don’t expect typical CEO-type answers from him. We’ll send him (direct, not through a PR person) 10 or 12 of your best questions Friday afternoon (US EST), and run his answers during the first week of 2006.

I am a simple person with a simple question. Following years and years and years… (I am now retired!) of using Microsoft Internet Explorer browser it would be difficult to just “change”.

Which brings me to my simple question (and I wonder if it will be answered….DIRECTLY??).

At present my Microsoft IE Version 6.0 browser works fine for me. Will it continue to work OK if I install Opera please; put another way, will they both work together satisfactorily until I can see that for me one suits me more than the other?

It is not a realistic situation for some like myself after years of use which frankly has been OK to just SWAP in an instant from one Browser to another.

    Wait to hear.

David: Go ahead and install Opera - it won’t change MSIE in any way. The two browsers will happily co-exist on the one computer, allowing you to use them both at the same time if you wish.

Take Opera at your own pace. MSIE has many annoyances (and poor support for web standards), while Opera has many nice features, so it’s worth a try. Come back in a few months and tell us which browser you find works best for you!

If IE is running satisfactorily for you you are one of the few and the proud. IE will work the same when you install Opera, I think that you will quickly discover that opera is much better and decide to distinguish IE. I was a proud IE user until Opera went free and I quickly switched because Opera is by far THE FASTEST browser on the internet.

I don’t know how to change the specifications in opera6.ini file for the following files/folders in Opera:

    sessions folder

    vlink4.dat

    cookies4.dat

    download.dat

    opcacrt6.dat

    opcert6.dat

    oprand.dat

    opssl6.dat

    jswarn.dir

    urlwarn.dir

It is notable that for the other files I could change it successfully. No descriptions are found in website of opera for these. And also the thing that is told there for sessions folder doesn’t work.

    Please help me!

    Thanks

    Reza

Are there any search engine toolbars available for “OPERA 8.5”?
