Opera Mini on Treo or Blackberry

October 25, 2006

Mini proves smart: Opera Mini Web browser for your BlackBerry or Treo is a press release which seems to tell me that Opera Mini works on my Treo.

To which I say, well, duh. I’ve been doing that for a long time on my Treo.

There are some drawbacks, not the least of which is the need to install the IBM Java JVM which comes conveniently packaged as roughly 8,472 files, of which you need 4.

If you use the English version you can download just the files you need for Opera Mini (854k, zip file).

That link is mostly there for me next time I need to try to find it. I can’t remember how many times I’ve put together a zip of just the 4 files that I actually need.

Other problems:

  • Opera Mini is still limited to 2mb downloads (it actually hands downloads off to Blazer).
  • Opera cannot receive URLs from other programs such as Chatter
  • There is no way to copy/paste to or from Opera Mini, not even the current URL (this is the real killer IMO)

Note: if you want to disable the prompt Opera gives to connect to the Internet on your Treo, install j9secpol.prc (4k).

Download Opera Mini for Treo 650 here.
