Font Preferences

September 21, 2005

This section is fairly self-explanatory (hence the length). Opera lets you choose your own font for various pieces of the user interface (such as the compose font for email) and web pages. Note that “interface display email” is also used for newsgroups (Usenet) and newsfeeds (RSS and Atom) as well.

It can be a good idea to set a minimum font size. Opera attempts to display fonts no smaller than that size. This is very useful when visiting pages designed by youngsters with perfect eyesight. (<q class="grumpy-old-man">you little whippersnappers with your perfect eyesight and your danged loud rock & roll music.</q> *shakes cane menacingly*)

Just a note to prevent disappointments (my brother asked me that question once): The font you choose for composing email is not carried all the way to the recipient. She/he will see your email in plain text, presented according to her/his preferences.

    …designMode (rich text editing)…

If I understand that correctly, styling of text might be included in future releases, but for now, mail remains plain pure text.

I changed some font settings and would like to reset them to the default fonts. How do I do this? Or, what are the default settings?

(TjL adds: The default fonts depend on what fonts you have installed. I can’t tell you what they are, because they are different for everyone. Maybe someone else will know for sure, my guess is that the font choices are stored in the opera6.ini file in your profile directory. Make a backup of that file, edit out the font lines while Opera is not running, and then restart Opera. I would assume that would work.)
