I had a set of saddlebags shipped via Fedex from California to Colorado. Two baxes, same address, shipped same time, and I paid $65 for 3 day ground. Got the first box 12/22/05. Second box got all the way to Henderson, Colorado )about 20 miles away), before getting rerouted - "we're sorry" - to Boise, Idaho. "Your shipment will arrive 12/24." Today, it's in Salt Lake. Now it's not expected until 12/28/05. I could have used snail mail, paid $12, and sent it USPS. Instead, I got my Fedex on-line access so I can precisely track my package in real time directly to the wrong destination.

Two UPS stories from my time at a company (that shall remain nameless to protect the guilty) to which UPS had outsourced some of their accounts receivable work:

Story #1: Of course when asking people why they hadn't paid UPS, a common answer was, "Because they didn't deliver my *&^%$!! package on time!" The best one of these was from an Ironman Triathlon registrant whose bicycle was delivered the day after the event.

Story #2: The company I worked for had, er, shall we say "neglected" to let UPS know that the legacy software used to track the accounts receivable was incapable of processing credits. (Why build new software on your own dime when you already have something fully amortized lying around that can kinda do the job?) So the folks whose umpty-$$$$ shipments never got to the destination on time (or maybe at all) who were assured by UPS that the shipping charges would be credited to their accounts, so yeah they may have lost all kinds of business or not have been able to participate in the Triathlon but at least they didn't have to pay for it...? Right, those were the first ones we called - "Mr. Righteously Indignant Customer, my computer-which-cannot-lie is showing me right here you owe UPS umpty-$$$$. Why Mr. RIC, such language."
