White Sharpies and Thin Pages

November 20, 2006

So I was looking for a white Sharpie. Turns out they don’t make them. It’s actually an FAQ on their website:

Why isn’t the SHARPIE marker available in white? A white marker requires a pigmented, rather than a dye base ink, to achieve the required opacity. With the ink technology available, we have been unable to manufacture a marker or pen that will uniformly capillary out white ink. In the future, however, as new ink technology develops, it is quite possible we will be able to make a pigmented white ink marker. Until then we suggest trying Sanford’s white Sharpie Paint or Poster-Paint marker. It is a valve action marker, which requires a pumping action.

Huh. I had thought that I could write on my black computer cables and mark them as to what they go to (nothing worse than having a bunch of cables and not being able to remember what they are for, or if you even need them any more.

While I was looking around I saw this:

I’ve purchased an Accent dry highlighter (a.k.a. Bible highlighter) in the past, but I can’t find it now? Unfortunately, we do not make those highlighters anymore. We would recommend trying the Sharpie Accent Liquid highlighters because they tend not to bleed thru thinner paper.

As a previous owner of one of these so-called “dry highlighters” let me provide my own answer to this question:

“We really tried to come up with something to let you hightlight your Bible pages (which are notoriously thin) and so we marketed that this thing we called a ‘dry highlighter’ (parents of preschool children might know these better as ‘crayons’) but discovered that the pages are so thin that they not only bleed regular highlighter or pen ink, but they are also so thin that trying to use these dry highlighters would cause the pages to rip.”

Another question might be: “Given all the Ph.D and D.Min students who have used the New Testament, not to mention seminarians, not to mention college students and a whole host of other folks, why can’t anyone make a Bible with pages thick enough that I can use a pen or regular highlighter on it?”
