Opera Merlin Preview brings new keyboard shortcuts

October 20, 2005

MacWorld recently reviewed Opera (see my critique of MacWorld’s review) and complained that Opera did not use cmd + T for a new tab.

The recently released preview of Opera9 (codename Merlin) includes a new set of keyboard shortcuts, including cmd + T for new tab.

(NOTE: Windows users, use ctrl where I refer to the Mac Command key.)

For those who have used Opera for awhile, this will take some adjustment. This one change had a ripple effect:

cmd + T used to be “Bookmark This Page” which is now cmd + D.

cmd + D used to be “Paste and Go” which is now cmd + shift + V (similar to “Paste” which is, of course, cmd + V.

(Unfortunately there is a bug where “Paste and Go” now opens a background page/tab rather than reusing the current page/tab. That is a known-bug.)

Well if +T was all that MacWorld could think up for Opera, I must say we’ve got ourself a pretty nitpicky critique who can’t find much else to complain about in the greatest browser on the planet.

I liked the new scheme of shortcuts because it’s more universal (all the browsers I use, have this set for keyboard shortcuts). And once again I learned something new: the paste and go feature. Thanks TjL! This new version of Opera is promising, and I really hope they deliver an ACID2 complaint browser.

I don’t like this. CTRL+N is much more natural to press because more applications use it for new pages.

But, I guess that in order to attract Firefox users, it’s for the best. Thankfully, Opera lets you customize the keybindings, so I won’t be bothered long.
