CNN Guilty of Bad Web Design

June 13, 2005

So I went to CNN when I heard the jury was in on the Michael Jackson case, and before the verdicts have been read, this is the chart that CNN has prepared:

[CNN chart showing color coding chart in preparation for verdicts in Michael Jackson trial]

Here’s just one of the accessibility problems: I can’t tell the “Not Guilty” and the “Hung Jury” colors apart. The “Guilty” one looks darker than the others, but I’m not sure what color it is (red? brown? Could be green…)

See, silly me, I would have come up with a boring old ASCII symbol like G, N, H (Guilty, Not-Guilty, Hung).

Or maybe X 0 -

sigh

In California they just sentenced to death a man that spent 25 years in prison and became children’s writer. And they declared Jackson not guilty….mmm

((TjL adds: well, the man who was executed was convicted of killing 4 people. Jackson wasn’t convicted of doing anything, and what he was accused of was far less than murder. What people do in prison is important, I guess, but it doesn’t always offset what they do to get there. It’s like doing really well on a final exam after not showing up for the entire semester. Should you get an A because you came out and made a strong finish?

That said, I’m not sure that the death penalty is a very wise use of resources, not to mention something with serious moral and ethical and theological issues))
